Forex : Political: Obama "Has Not Ruled Out" NYC For 9/11 Terror Suspect Trial
President Barack Obama has not ruled out putting suspected September 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed on trial in New York City, but he is considering the objections raised by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg before making a final decision.
When asked if his administration would carry through with the Justice Department's decision to hold Mohammed on trial in New York, Obama told CBS News on Sunday he 'has not ruled it out.'
'But I think it's important for us to take into account the practical, logistical issues involved,' he added.
Bloomberg had initially voiced his support for the idea for holding the trial in New York, but later balked when the estimated cost for security reached around $1 billion.
He said the trial should instead be held someplace where it would make sense, like on a military base.
In addition, New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly objected to holding the trial in the city since the Justice Department never briefed him on its plans to holding it in lower Manhattan.
'If you've got a city that is saying 'no' and a police department that's saying 'no' and a mayor that's saying 'no,' that makes it difficult,' Obama said in the interview.
Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) later voiced an opinion on the matter, saying, 'Based on the security, logistical and cost concerns raised by the mayor and the police commissioner, it is not feasible to have the trials in New York. The administration should realize that and move on.'
Mohammed is currently being held in the Guantanamo Bay military prison. Attorney General Eric Holder announced in November 2009 that the department planned to bring Mohammed and four other suspects tied to the September 11 attacks to New York for civilian trials rather than military trials.
The decision immediately came under fire, with concerns about security topping the list of objections.
